Once seen as something for children and teenagers, more and more adults are having their teeth straightened – and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping. Spurred on by an increase in social media, celebrity smiles and reality TV shows – often showcasing the perfect teeth – fixed braces and clear aligners have become much more socially acceptable for adults over the past few years.
Why now?
Many people wait until adulthood to have their teeth corrected for financial reasons – later in life, it can be more affordable – but also the stigma of wearing fixed braces seems to have disappeared. Celebrity endorsement has helped, especially with celebs posting pictures aplenty of themselves online.
Some adults simply want to do something for themselves after years of thinking about their families, while others have found they have more time and patience to care for their teeth properly while undergoing treatment. And some are spurred on after seeing the amazing results that their children have achieved with braces.
Does it work?
Yes, adults’ teeth can see huge improvements after wearing fixed braces or clear aligners, though of course it depends on individual cases, and what needs doing. Adults need to have a healthy set of teeth and a normal jaw bone to begin with, and any other dental issues, such as gum disease or cavities, should be dealt with by a dentist first.
As adult teeth have stopped growing, they require more pressure to gently move into the correct position than children’s teeth, so it will be a slightly longer process.
How long does it take?
Adult treatment typically takes from 18 months to 3 years. After this, you’ll have to wear retainers to stop the teeth moving back again.
What are my options?
Braces are the most common appliance, and are extremely effective. We offer a choice between traditional metal braces and clear fixed braces, both with clever self-ligating brackets. The clear ones are less noticeable, which might be a factor if you're a bit self-conscious about treatment.
Another great option is clear aligners, which is a system of virtually invisible, plastic aligners that are worn over the teeth and replaced every 7-14 days as your teeth move. The great thing about these is that you can take them off to eat – or when you're taking that quick selfie – and they’re really discreet.
