Brushing and flossing your teeth and gums, eating a healthy diet, and having professional dental cleanings done every six months will go a long way in preserving your beautiful, healthy smile. But, even with all this care you might still end up with a cavity or two. If you have recently had a tooth repaired to stop tooth decay, and are experiencing tooth sensitivity, read on for what to do!
While it is common to experience some tooth sensitivity when you have a filling done by your dentist, it usually resolves itself within two to four weeks, sometimes less. But sometimes it does not. Let’s take a look at some of ways your tooth might hurt after a dental filling procedure.
–After a filling is done your tooth might hurt when you bite down. This normally gets better within a few weeks as the filling settles in the tooth.
–Temperature extremes can cause the tooth to feel sensitive after a filling. You may feel a brief pain when eating and drinking hot or cold foods. Just be careful and keep the substance away from the newly filled cavity. If the discomfort seems difficult to deal with, we may suggest a desensitizing toothpaste for you, or apply a desensitizing solution on the tooth to help.
–A newly filled cavity can send out pain signals to your surrounding teeth making them feel like they are hurting too.
–If your bite hurts because the filling is higher than the tooth’s surface, we may reshape the filling for you so that it fits together better.
–If the decay in the filled cavity was too deep, and its proximity to the tooth pulp means that the diseased tissue isn’t healthy enough to support the filling, you will likely need a root canal to remove all the unhealthy tissue.
